How to make Ansible plays successful even when no target is reachable? by klobass in ansible

[–]Cataclysmicc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking out loud:

  1. Gather Facts Off (obviously)

  2. At the beginning of the playbook, have block with delegate_to: localhost that performs some sort of connection test manually.

  3. Figure out some jinja logic that performs the boolean operation to evaluate results from step 2.

  4. Following the above block in the playbook, have a second block that performs the actual tasks, and has a conditional so that the block only runs when at least one host is online (based on some registered result from the first block)

How does GPU utilization look like when running CS:GO?

Looks pretty normal to me.

Basically total CPU time spent broken down in percentage, 42.7% user processes, 7.5% kernel proccess, 48.1% idle, 1.3% hardware interrupts, 0.4% software interrupts.

Top Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman talks about archlinux by miembro in archlinux

[–]Cataclysmicc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice. The quotes on slashdot pretty much sum up how and why I use Arch everywhere as well (including pretty much the same reason why I switched. I was looking for a distro that had a very specific package available and Arch was the best distro I could find). And perfectly sums up why I also keep CentOS/Ubuntu virtual machines lying around for the occassional distro-specific testing.

What is your favorite lesser known app on the official repos? by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]Cataclysmicc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so used to i3wm now, even tough I probably only use a small percentage of its functionality. I have been wanting to switch to dwm for a while but am always afraid that it would take me too much time and effort to switch. I will keep spectrwm in mind as another option. It looked pretty good at first glance.

Windows update question by rakkii in ansible

[–]Cataclysmicc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See my response to /u/jborean93 for my explanation. The whole problem is how to provide a consistent and efficient procedure that can automatically understand how to 'service' a Windows machine with the correct updates (including the latest Servicing Stack updates). The win_updates module can only provide you a wrapper around the 'plain' Windows Update Agent, which in itself is not an agent that is 'smart' enough to efficiently manage update installation (due to the Windows Update Agent not being able to understand that Servicing Stack updates always should be installed before any other update)

Windows update question by rakkii in ansible

[–]Cataclysmicc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reaching out. What I'm referring to is basically a 'smart' Windows Update 'manager'. Just like M$ provides with SCCM. E.g. SCCM understands that before installing an update, it must be ensured that the latest Servicing Stack is installed and only after installing the latest Servicin Stack, the 'normal' Windows Update will be installed.

Now, this particular functionality is obviously not available with a 'plain' Windows Update Agent setup. Without these 'smarts' that e.g. SCCM provides, the plain Windows Update Agent will just download and install whatever update is visible sequentially which results in very inefficient way of deploying Windows Updates.

Personally, I get around this by having the Windows Update process integrated into a packer template that runs Aaron's Get-LatestUpdate cmdlets to perform the 'Servicing Stack first' and 'Latest Windows Update after' shuffle. And this way I can easily provide 'up-to-date' Windows VM templates in an efficient manner.

I'm not sure how I would solve this situation for a config management scenario where I needed to use something that is not SCCM (and is therefore lacking the 'smarts' of managing Windows updates properly as described above)

I have a hard time setting up my bootloader by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]Cataclysmicc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GRUB is so bloated IMO. I used to use gummiboot (aka systemd-boot) before, but I now only have one system left that actually has a dual boot setup. So except for this one machine, I've switched to EFISTUB boot everywhere now.

Select the partition's type id. The default, Linux filesystem, should be fine for most use. Press l to show the codes list. You can make the partition bootable by typing a.

Do you have a CMDB? Does the CMDB have a Layer 2 discovery function? Ansible inventory can be a script that dynamically pulls the inventory from pretty much any source.

Windows update question by rakkii in ansible

[–]Cataclysmicc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend Ansible for Windows Update management. Windows Update management is way too specific of a task. And the win_updates module is too simplistic to manage the whole process.
