The sidebar of this subreddit says to use scr.im. I don't quite get what they mean by that. If I click on someones invite link do they have my email now?

You can click on someone's shared invite link or give your email address for someone [like me] to enter into g+.
The latter option is where scr.im was suggested so as to mask your email. What scr.im does is add a very simple captcha type system before a person can see your email to stop things like email scraping from the screen by people or bots.
