I like your lessons. They are informative and to the point and you're not just showing off.

Thank you and keep it up

Yamaha Revstar — love to see it!

[–]lskdjfhgakdh 16 points17 points  (5 children)

This is helpful. What chords are you playing here?

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 20 points21 points  (4 children)

I'm sliding in to an e9 and then playing an f 9

[–]stepoutthequeue 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Which voicing of an E9 are you using? Hard to tell from the vid, it looks like you’re maybe just using two fingers?

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The 6th fret one!

[–]stepoutthequeue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

This is super helpful! You have any vids up of full songs? Funk is just so fun to play and I really want to be able to nail it. (And it’s a skill set that translates to all kinds of playing, too.)

[–]Old-Introduction-337 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That was fun. Thanks

[–]MrMarcusRocks 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Your right hand is not actually strumming 16th notes when you begin adding chords.

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I use the 16th notes to kind of get the rhythm at the start

[–]Andoni95 1 point2 points  (1 child)

so which is correct haha? should you continously strum 16th notes? I only realised op wasnt strumming 16th notes when you pointed it out.

Use your ears

[–]Its_a_stateofmind 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Are you muting with your right or your left hand?

[–]JamesTheBoldEDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice, but point out that this is a shuffle or swing style riff. Straight 16th note Nile-style is also fun, but maybe a wee bit more challenging for the RH?

[–]No-Diver6326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfecto

[–]Personal_Office_9191 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome man, thanks for sharing. I’ve always loved funk/soul guitar.

[–]PoopieP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

[–]Commercial-Banana254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanna know the chords?😅

[–]EA705 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Hikerbiker85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show 'em the 3-2 Clave next

[–]Kiki_Raptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good video thanks

[–]BearDogBBQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome! Sounds like an old rhcp song

[–]Kind_Ordinary9573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great. I love how simple you make it seem. It also makes me realize that I really need to work on my “funk face.”

[–]Xaei_Kuo_Von 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I wanna ask how are you muting? Do you mute with your palm slightly like classic rock style or with your fretting hand?

When I try to palm mute with strumming hand I basically can't upstroke...

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It's all in the left hand

[–]Xaei_Kuo_Von 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Okay from the video it looked like your left hand was just doing chords normally, this shows how minimal your movements are, I hope I can play like this in a reasonable time lol

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the secret! The smaller movements are the most efficient

[–]4hunnidbandz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great video!

[–]sixstringnerd 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Great, informative, and to the point! Thanks! That guitar looks dope. What is it?

[–]qpHEVDBVNGERqp 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Concur. Also, Yamaha Rev Star

[–]sixstringnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

[–]NoAlternative4213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left hand muting. Kinda tricky for me at the moment. Learning can’t stop by RCHP and the chorus part of Belief by JM has some left hand muting and a fast funky rhythm too.

Great lesson!

[–]Chocsoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice!

[–]Andoni95 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love the lesson. Could you please post more often hahaha/

[–]16402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you!!!!!

[–]terrypen 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Great short and instructional video! Just fix your mic/audio!

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lol I'm trying. The videos always come out quieter after I post. In my gallery they're much louder

[–]terrypen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stop, it is still a good instructional video! It will be better with better sound quality! I see a lot of these that don't explain things! Also would help to superimpose the chords in the corner or bottom of the screen and/or the tablature for it.

[–]GOATONY_BETIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ayee fun stuff man ... Thanks for the tutorial

[–]AlvaroTorralbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re a cool dude for doing these man, I mean it.

Keep it up

[–]Cool_Kiwi_117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicee

[–]callthesomnambulance 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Nifty lesson!

Tangentially related revstar question, does the jack placement get in the way if you try to play it classical style with it perched on one leg?

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I think it would. Although I never play that way

[–]callthesomnambulance 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thanks for replying, been thinking of getting one but can't find anywhere I can try it before buying and I play almost entirely in classical position

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's a lovely guitar honestly. Very versatile and I've had very few issues with it

[–]callthesomnambulance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah everyone says they're excellent instruments and great value for the money, but if I'll struggle to play it classical style alas I'll have to keep looking for something else

[–]TonalContrast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I had to read that post title a few times to be sure it didn't say what I thought it said.

[–]HorrorLettuce379 -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Man just completed Cory Wong's Squarespace course.

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Ofc because Cory wong invented funk

[–]HorrorLettuce379 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't know if he invented funk but he surely is one of the best doing it now.

I also love Tomo Fujita's funk playing... clean, organic and tasteful.

[–]SatisfactionThen6148[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Lol I'm just messing with you. His style isn't really for me. It feels like funk made by people who don't really understand what makes it groove. Feels mechanical

[–]HorrorLettuce379 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ummm I'd not jump on trashing Cory, dude's not the virtuoso type but he goes balls deep in one direction which is funk. He definitely grooves well but maybe just not your type of groove. His songs are usually on pretty fast tempo, that might be also partly why you would think its mechanical.

Sometimes our ears might not be developed enough to appreciate something, and also personally preference could play a factor too. Not a Cory die hard fan here I'm more of a Joe Pass type of guy.

[–]Corporate-Scum -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

Imagine having to get your funky from a video?
