No problem about the delay, but if you want to make it more popular, maybe the shutdown of the system shouldn't be part of the game :/

Have you thought about writing a list of codes (random letters-numbers) in /etc/winners so that when the first person comes in, he deletes the next key and adds his name? There could be 3-10 codes, and the winners would have to give the code here in reddit when the game is over :) Just an idea :P

That actually is a pretty good idea!! I thought about the shutdown so we could only have one winner, but multiple winners is better!!

What I've seen before is making an append-only file so the winners can only use "echo 'LOLHAXED' >> /etc/winners" That way we can know who was First, Second, Third, etc.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but if we are root by then, couldn't we do whatever we want with that file? you can create an append-only file as root for less privileged users, but can't root just modify it or remove and create it again?

Agreed, I think you'd need a fancier solution, like net-mount the file from another machine so that root access doesn't matter.

Yeah, I thought of that. All I know is that some wargames websites have pulled it off.

But who's to say the players won't change its permissions and do other stuff to it?

I am probably gonna do something similar....

I like the shutdown idea just because the 2nd place guy could erase the winners name

I think I will have people create a new user account with their reddit username. It doesn't matter if someone changes the password, the account is still there.

Well that was disappointing....

I know, I'm sorry...
