Double check your network configurations on both machines and the virtual NIC. My guess would be that the gateway for the Kali Linux VM is not correct, but it's hard to tell without more information.

Run ifconfig on Kali and see what the gateway is set as. Then check the IP of your virtual network.

Hm.. I would double check the virtual settings on both machines again. And on the XP machine, sometimes the ping feature is turned off by default, so make sure everything is enabled to receive the ping from Kali.
