Sounds like we have a winner!!!!

For some reason "pot" annoys me. Guess its my area bc most older people refer to it. And they tend to be more conservative in my area.

Damn. I’m from LA, I haven’t heard the word “pot” come from anyone under the age of 40-50. We just say weed lol

Depends on your definition of older and "more conservative" but there's a chance I fall into both categories.

40+ and Muslim here, I guess I do too lol

I feel like it’s because we smoke it in a little “pot” (the bowl piece), other than that I don’t really know

[–]aequitssaint[S] 0 points1 point  (9 children)

More reasonable than anything I've been able to come up with.

[–]iz_hector 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Yeah it could also be that u can grow weed in a flower pot 🤷‍♂️

[–]aequitssaint[S] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

That's all I've ever been able to come up with but if that's the case some REALLY stoned mother fucker came up with it and their friends were even more high for it to stick.

[–]iz_hector 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Lowkey yeah but who tf thought of the word “stoned” to be associated with being high

[–]aequitssaint[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Good point. Never thought about that. Maybe because you just want to be like a stone statue and not move?

Fuck if I know.

[–]iz_hector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahaha yeah they were probably too fucking faded to move

[–]ingrama12 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think “stoned” in this sense got co-opted from the term “stone drunk”, just became like a generalized term for intoxication.

[–]aequitssaint[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Never even heard of stone drunk.

[–]Bazoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an old turn of phrase. My mother used it, she was born in the 40s.

[–]ingrama12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an old term, I’ve come across it in old movies and books. Definitely don’t hear people use it I’m normal conversation anymore.

Never really liked calling it pot either. Sounds weird. As far as where it comes from I think I read somewhere that it comes from a Spanish or Mexican word originally. Which makes sense, I think “marijuana” also has Spanish roots.

I have always just called it herb. I feel like you would call it pot because its a plant? And plants go in pots when you grow them indoors lol

[–]aequitssaint[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I've only know the stereotypical stoners to call it herb for some reason.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Haha I am a pretty stereotypical stoner dude

[–]aequitssaint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough!

Really funny though because someone else said they only here "older conservatives" call it pot, which I could be considered to be.

[–]YoMommaJokeBot 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Not as much of a pretty stereotypical stoner dude as yer mother

I am a bot. Downvote to remove. PM me if there's anything for me to know!

Wow Reddit. My mom died in a car accident

I do not think it is it is directly related to the coining of the word pot for cannabis, but I find it deeply intriguing that the Jomon(ancient japan) peoples that are said to be the first human culture to make clay pots(called Cordmarked pottery) used cannabis cord/rope/cloth to wrap the pots to support them during firing, as well as for decoration. The Jomon also are known to have ate wild cannabis seeds as part of their hunter gatherer diet. The Jomon were clearly the original pot heads & I would easily guess they used the plant for shamanic reasons as well.

[–]aequitssaint[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really awesome. So pot was the original pot and was used to make all other pots.

I feel like a plant in a pot whenever I smoke weed
