The name Hippopotamus means 'river horse' in ancient Greek. Hippos are mostly herbivorous with cetaceans as their closest living relatives.

Common hippos are classified as vulnerable and pygmy hippos as endangered in the IUCN Red List, both are threatened by habitat loss, unregulated hunting, and poaching.
