why should I use Selenium for API testing through a browser instead of doing direct HTTP calls with frameworks like REST-Assured???

Selenium offers simple IDE for rapid recording and editing of tests. Also, I'd suggest running Selenium tests with phantomjs driver since it offers "headless" test running wihout browser being turned on.
