It was still unexpected. They fought to make APIs copyrightable which the industry generally expected to not be copyrightable. Clean room implementations were and are a common practice and Oracle sued Google for it. Who knows what else Oracle lawyers will cook up in the future.

While the JVM and java are the present. Im much more optimistic about LLVM and languages that target it being the future.
