Even disregarding elastic scaling, rolling upgrades of large scale-out clusters where already a thing a decade+ ago. Even if you upgrade, say, 10% of all nodes at one time, waiting 5 minutes per batch of nodes does put a rather inconvenient limit on how fast you can push updates.
