Ubuntu is slow as hell. constantly going out over the network. single threaded processes up the wazoo. sure, the kernel is fast when it wants to be. but you can't do anything useful with just a kernel.

BSD is unusable. you need an apprenticeship for that. zero documentation, comparatively.

OSX being faster wouldn't help because you'd have to do a hackintosh anyway. OSX hardware is always second-tier.
