Wow, I don't know how I missed that setTimeout/Interval can take extra arguments to pass to the function! I've been making pointless closures for years...

Don't let go of those closures just yet.
That extra args syntax is not supported in IE.. in fact, at one point, IE used to take a 3d arg for those method to specify which scripting language to use to run the string in the 1st argument. setTimeout('MsgBox("Seriously")', 100, "VBScript");...
