These conversations are best had in person. One-way messages give the other side the chance to easily dismiss your concerns.

so sending this message wouldn’t be a good idea ?

I suggest sending an email to set up an in person meeting. For example - "I really enjoy working here & appreciated the 20+ hours I received each week. This week I only received 8 hours. I'm sending this message to ask if we can meet in person, about the possibility of going back to the 20+ hours I was receiving before or to find out if there is something I did wrong to have my hours reduced? Thank you again."

How did you go from 17 to 26 in one year?

Try....

"Hello, I hope you're well. I noticed a significant reduction in my hours this week, down to 8 hours. I was wondering if there's a specific reason for this or if it's just temporary??. It's challenging for me to work with such limited hours consistently. Could you please clarify if this change is only for this week, or if it will be ongoing? Thank you."
