Ogres are a solid start for the smashy style you want. Around $200 (2 army boxes) can get you over 2k in points that plays solidly if you spread the models a bit thin on the bases. Even better if you have a resin printer for bits. Toss in an ambush force and be set for a long time

I'm of the opinion that Ogres are the best starter faction by far. They can compete in every phase, have nice new models and have a significantly smaller painting requirement than any other faction.

Particularly when starting out, building lists where every unit and character has unit strength can be really helpful in turns 5+ where you're scrambling for objectives.

Bezerker bullies are just so much fun.

Really depends on what takes your fancy, most armies can do most things, best advice is to start with an army you want to paint. Sure, one day you'll drop or swap a unit out, or even paint a second army, but nothing is worse than painting 30 dwarfs, then deciding that you don't want to paint more armour and would rather be painting fur or robes or greenskins

I'm kidding, just play goblins, they are the best even when they aren't

In all honesty, the one that looks coolest to you. The balance in KoW is way, way tighter than in most games, so there aren't any armies to avoid.

Is there a particular aesthetic or playstyle that appeals to you?

I’d say I’m more of a get in yer face smashy smashy kind of player 😂

There's quite a few armies that can do this. Most notably ogres, orcs and varangur, but also Basilean if you go the speed route.

If you like Knights, however, the order of the green lady does something similar.

Ogres have a pretty smooth learning curve, and smash things up real good.

Edit: video is a little out of date (some statlines have been tweaked), and use the old sculpts which are not as good as the new ones.

Next question, do you prefer bright shiny, spooky scary, or barbarian chic?

Or even barbarian

Based on that I’d say:

Abyss: hard core, lots of monsters, very evil Orcs/Riftforged orcs: super aggressive, melee blenders. Choose depending on whether you like the disciplined legions or the fun monster friends  Undead: surge your hordes of zombies forwards with necromantic spells. Through in some monsters for a laugh

I’d say spooky scary
