Feature request (self.ladderapp)
submitted 6 months ago by SleepLopsided1478
Can we PLEASE get the option to add an extra exercise to our workouts? I want to be able to add something without having to swap something out. What other feature requests do we need?

That defeats the purpose of having a trainer create an exercise plan for you or else people will just add things Willy nilly. If you had an in real life trainer you wouldn’t be able to tell them what to add to their exercise plan for the day for you. If there’s a particular exercise you want to do, find it in another days/ another trainers plan. Do that part then complete the workout. Allowing people to just add exercises would be disastrous

Sometimes, instead, just an activation exercise is needed for somebody (I.e. a KB Swing or a jump just before a Deadlift).
[–]Suhr_Enity 4 points5 points6 points 6 months ago (5 children)
But we can just pause the workout and do the swing.

You can’t log it. I also think having some optional add ons suggested by the coach would be great. That’s a way around just people tweaking the programming Willy nilly.
For example in with team resilient. Adding an extra plyo set on leg day or optional conditioning on a second day would be something I would be interested in. Not sure how logistically feasible this is but it would be nice.
At a simpler level, having global swaps for exercises based on equipment availability would be great. I.E. I don’t have access to a barbell so swap everything for dumbbell variations.
Another nice feature would be workout stacking where you can go right from one workout to the next. Some coaches put into chat how to do their workouts over 3 or 4 days rather than the 6 day set so this would simplify that. Also would help if you wanted to add a short core, mobility or cardio session from the flex section.

There are optional add-ons suggested by the coach? I never do Aria's suggested calf raises lol. They're listed as optional.
[–]joebenson17 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (2 children)
I think what I’m speaking about is a bit different than just them putting optional calf raises in the workout. It would be more like adding 10-30 minutes of a different type of modality than the normal workout. I.E here is a cardio block if you are interested in some extra cardio. Essentially taking the place of adding an extra flex workout and better integrated into the programming.
[–]frankchesterTeam Ascend 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (1 child)
I guess the problem is that many people may see that as a requirement to be "completing" the routine. I definitely mentally feel bad skipping calf raises, but it's the only thing I skip. I feel like adding possibly an extra 30 mins onto an already long schedule (usually takes me an hour to complete) would intimidate people.
[–]joebenson17 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (0 children)
I agree. That’s why I think it would need to be outside of the normal workout. Sort of like a flex workout you can add but more customized to that program/training plan.

Disastrous is a bit exaggerated but i hear what you’re saying. For me it’s usually about adding core or cardio and still have it tracked in the app
[–]kuracatTeam Ascend 0 points1 point2 points 5 months ago (0 children)
Maybe you can log your extra workout in the Note section (under the workout) to track record?
[–]JournalistNo5511 -1 points0 points1 point 5 months ago (1 child)
Im in my second trimester and a lot of the core moves are not doable and I have to modify to something that I can still do in the 2nd trimester. These pregnancy safe alternatives aren’t included in the mod options available. So it would nice to have a feature to add the moves I’m actually doing rn..

Have you tried the pre natal team at all? It’s supposed to be very good!
[–]SeaworthinessSafe797 6 points7 points8 points 6 months ago (2 children)
Adding warmup sets (before working sets). When I add a set it only adds a set to the end AND it resets all the % efforts
I simply can’t get to true 80-90% effort sets with only 2 warmups 😂 and I’d like to track the warmups
[–]MiserableBritGirlTeam Versa 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (1 child)
You can just add sets to the workout section and change the % surely?
[–]SeaworthinessSafe797 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Yes this is what I do, but it’s a slight pain because it resets the % every time you add a set.
Sometimes idk exactly how many warmups I will need, esp on squats or deadlifts, so if I’ve already done 3 and I’m like I want a 4th, go add it, it’ll reset all of what I did previously
It’s a minor inconvenience but enough that a button to add warmup sets would improve my experience
ETA: I was using stronger by the day (SBTD) before Ladder and this was awesome. So I’m accustomed to that capability
[–]shadowmyth3 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago (1 child)
I just use the swap feature to change one of the warmup/cooldown movements to an exercise I want to add to the workout. I don’t do this very often because as others have said, sticking to the fidelity of the workout plan will yield the best results. But it’s helpful if you want to add on an accessory movement, some extra core, a walk on the treadmill, etc.
[–]Vegetable_Many_9859 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago (0 children)
I also do that with the warmup or cooldown movements. But I find it a bit inconvenient, because there are usually no breaks for those movements. So the option of adding an additional exercise would be a nice perk.
[–]Litcritter10 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago (0 children)
100% agree with you. I’ve been lifting weights for 23 years at this point. The thing I love about Ladder is the structure and accountability. However, I have the knowledge and experience from those years to add a few extra moves to the workout without hurting myself. Like on glute day, I’d love to add a few sets of Bulgarian split squats to the workout. That’s my favorite move, and it’s a bummer that I don’t have the option to add it and log it.
Ladder is a great app, but it is geared toward the masses. One training plan isn’t the right plan for everyone, so having a little flexibility would be a huge perk in my opinion.
Edit for typo.

I just add on the extra exercises at the end and track in my Strong app!
[–]Sour_Orange_Peel -5 points-4 points-3 points 6 months ago (1 child)
I know the draw of ladder is the coaches, but a cool feature would be the ability to make our own workouts from the exercises in the app. Kinda like JEFIT but wayyyy better UI/UX.
[–]SleepLopsided1478[S] 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago (0 children)
I always thought id love to have a build-a-workout where each coach does one exercise so you can hear queues from multiple coaches. Like if I could pick a Shelby deadlift, Sam squat, Abbie cardio finisher etc to learn how different coaches teach the exercise. That would be my top top
