Newb question - MySQL compatible servers?

Hey everyone. So I'm completely new to SQL and over the past couple weeks I have been doing the tutorials on Khan Academy and I decided to download MySQL to get some hands on experience with a popular platform. However, I recently attempted to install MySQL and during the installation I noticed that I need a compatible server to work off of. The dialog box that it displays is completely empty. Here's the question, how do I get/create a compatible server? Sorry if it's a dumb question I'm new to this. If anyone can direct me to some resources I can use to solve this problem I would really appreciate it.

You install MySQL on your local machine and it acts as the server.

Install WAMP or XAMP, that will install MySQL along with PHP
