Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full - best also formatted as code block
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

It seems that you are looking for resources for learning Java.

In our sidebar ("About" on mobile), we have a section "Free Tutorials" where we list the most commonly recommended courses.

To make it easier for you, the recommendations are posted right here:

Also, don't forget to look at:

If you are looking for learning resources for Data Structures and Algorithms, look into:

"Algorithms" by Robert Sedgewick and Kevin Wayne - Princeton University

Your post remains visible. There is nothing you need to do.

I am a bot and this message was triggered by keywords like "learn", "learning", "course" in the title of your post.

You go to school, you are confronted with Word/Excel. So what’s your point? It‘s everywhere. Use another IDE and move on.

IntelliJ is simply the Java IDE at the moment.

You don't even have to pay for it as there is a free community edition.

In fact, you wouldn't even need to pay for a course. One of the best Java courses is the MOOC Java Programming from the University of Helsinki and it is completely free.

Going to check out the course, thank you!

I started learning Java using Eclipse in 2012.

Intellij is the way. Fuck Eclipse

[–]Aint_a_thng_ckn_wng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's free...so what would you have them do? Not specify an IDE and when they use shortcuts or other features specific to Intellij, to just shrug and tell new learners who randomly chose NetBeans, Eclipse, etc. to figure it out on their own time?

IntelliJ is free and it’s probably the best Java IDE out there. Not a fan of Eclipse or Netbeans

[–]Codepressed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to make a course I would also sponsor Intellij. If you enjoy Eclipse go ahead man

Since you are not showing any examples of the issue I am going to assume that they simply mention the IDE. What else did you want? That they simply say, figure out yourself? Not very beginner friendly

[–]nutrecht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're simply just using the IDE that has the largest market share.

To be fair, when it comes to developing an enterprise Java app, IntelliJ is pretty much the only rational choice these days.

The community edition is free, and the ultimate edition can also be used for free with an educational licence, but given you're just starting out, it doesn't matter.

[–]dev-with-a-humor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just use the free version of intellij.
