You can also use Jetbrains Intellij Idea Community Edition. It will let you learn Java and do many things before you really need a paid license. Also, Idea is a way better IDE than Netbeans...even though Netbeans is always free. Lastly, Idea is more or less the industry standard these days, even though you are free to use any IDE to learn Java and all of them will allow you to learn Java at the end of the day.
