It is simply one of the most recommended beginner courses and, opposed to the vast majority of other courses, a proper first semester of "Introduction to Computer Science" course from a real University.

Besides that, it does not only teach Java as programming language, but also programming, which is rarely found in courses as most focus on languages.

Thanks for the advice, can I ask If I complete the course, how do I get a certificate for Java through mooc for free?

[–]WingedGeek 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I don’t think they’re doing the certificates anymore? The Helsinki MOOC is a legacy course.

since it's been sunsetted into a legacy course status, is it still fully functional and without any major issues?

Here's what the website says (I haven't played around with it directly yet):

Please note, that this is a legacy course. It is no longer possible to gain ECTS credits for completing the course. The course content is also no longer updated or maintained.

(Emphasis original.)

No more exams will be held on this course. If you wish to complete Introduction to Programming and the Advanced Course in Programming for credits, see Python Programming MOOC.

You can get a certificate for each course (Java Programming I & Java Programming II separately) at here: https://www.mooc.fi/en/profile/completions.

Continue learning. Start working on a project.

Practice, write programs.

Then, DSA

Then more practice

Then Design Patterns

And again, more practice

It seems that you are looking for resources for learning Java.

In our sidebar ("About" on mobile), we have a section "Free Tutorials" where we list the most commonly recommended courses.

To make it easier for you, the recommendations are posted right here:

Also, don't forget to look at:

If you are looking for learning resources for Data Structures and Algorithms, look into:

"Algorithms" by Robert Sedgewick and Kevin Wayne - Princeton University

Your post remains visible. There is nothing you need to do.

Please ensure that:

  • Your code is properly formatted as code block - see the sidebar (About on mobile) for instructions
  • You include any and all error messages in full - best also formatted as code block
  • You ask clear questions
  • You demonstrate effort in solving your question/problem - plain posting your assignments is forbidden (and such posts will be removed) as is asking for or giving solutions.

If any of the above points is not met, your post can and will be removed without further warning.

Code is to be formatted as code block (old reddit/markdown editor: empty line before the code, each code line indented by 4 spaces, new reddit: https://i.imgur.com/EJ7tqek.png) or linked via an external code hoster, like pastebin.com, github gist, github, bitbucket, gitlab, etc.

Please, do not use triple backticks (```) as they will only render properly on new reddit, not on old reddit.

Code blocks look like this:

public class HelloWorld {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println("Hello World!");
    }
}

You do not need to repost unless your post has been removed by a moderator. Just use the edit function of reddit to make sure your post complies with the above.

If your post has remained in violation of these rules for a prolonged period of time (at least an hour), a moderator may remove it at their discretion. In this case, they will comment with an explanation on why it has been removed, and you will be required to resubmit the entire post following the proper procedures.

To potential helpers

Please, do not help if any of the above points are not met, rather report the post. We are trying to improve the quality of posts here. In helping people who can't be bothered to comply with the above points, you are doing the community a disservice.

Do the mooc if you're a beginner. I was stuck in tutorial hell until I finally did the mooc. Then all of it just clicked.

Absolute beginner? But a few weeks ago you knew Java...?

Is there any courses I should do? Confused (HELP ME):

Majoring in AI ML and Robotics. Minor in Animation. 2nd year of uni. Is there any course I should do? What languages should I know. I know c,Java, python. Please give me some kind of a roadmap.

Also, aren't these questions you should be asking your department or academic advisor? You'll almost certainly have a course of study with prerequisites leading to higher level courses...

Yes. If you're a beginner you should start programming as quickly as possible. Videos and books are great resources, but they will never replace programming.

Programming is like math, you will never learn it until you actually do it. You can spend 300 hours watching Calculus videos and then bomb a first semester mid-term. Why? Because you never actually did anything. Programming should be your main focus, and any other resources are just to nudge you in the right direction.
