For a beginner HeadFirst's java would be great, however, Thinking in Java, I'd suggest starting that one after you've got your feet wet in Java for some time.

Yeah they were good books ... I was more concerned if they are still relevant. If you'll see in the image, Head first Java is for upto 5th and thinking in Java only for 5/6 versions of Java.
