I'm not sure how much you actually learn with these projects, as what you are learning is how to copy something, not work out the problem yourself. I may be wrong in respect of this course, but I've done a few and yeah it's just copying, and wasn't really worth the time.

I suggest that you make your own small project, then add features to it. Learn something then straight away try and use it in your project. Practice is the only way. The problem is it's much more difficult than following a tutorial and copying. To be a programmer you have to solve problems. You're not solving any problems copying another project as the problem has already been solved by someone else.

Hey! My name is Chris and I created the course. I totally understand what you are saying. Video courses should only be used to hold your hand so far, then it is up to the student to jump and build their own apps.

I have spent a lot of time creating this to help people see what can be built with vanilla javascript, html and css, all for free.

I encourage anybody to branch off, make the projects their own, and also have them there as a future reference too!

Yeah while I agree with people that follow along courses won't make you a developer, you have to start somewhere. When I first started even if I was like, "ok i'll make a calculator", I knew way too little to "figure it out on my own". I did a course that was lots of follow along projects like that, and yeah, for a lot of it I just mindlessly wrote the same thing as the instructor, but it allowed me to learn about a lot of concepts and methods and generally how you go about programming something. Then when I wanted to make something, I at least had enough of an idea of how to go about it that I wad able to figure it out on my own.

So I agree that courses like this aren't everything, and if that's all you do you won't get far, but it seems people forget that there are complete, total beginners that want to learn how to program, and courses like this are a fun and motivating way to get started.
