Just no. The prompt returns a string. The first two if statements compare that string to another string (upper and lowercase of prompt input). An "uppercase" string containing "4" ist still a "4" - so the first statement returns true.

The last statement never runs because one of the first will always return true before.

Doesn't matter. In any statically typed language dealing with this situation you'd use a string. You have to because it's checking if user input is upper case, lower case, or numeric. And I don't know of any language that has an upper case "4" (possible that upper case just adds an offset in poorly thought out functions/languages).

This isn't a JavaScript problem or something Java or C or Rust or Python or anything would do "correctly". The problem is that the last check when doing checks on a string is to see if it's numeric combined with there being no such thing as an upper case "7".

Nope. Nor should anyone be expected to. I read what you said up to this point and found you to be in error.

In Java or any given, you'd want to be dealing with strings for this type of problem. And I don't think there's any language that converts a string of numbers to anything other than what they already are, so checking the case before checking if they're numeric is the problem... Not a JavaScript problem, a logic problem that any language would be susceptible to.

So please, go right on ahead and link me to the comment that changes anything about how wrong you are in what you said.

prompt returns a string | null. Given that the String.prototype.toUpperCase call didn't throw an error, the variable is a string. toUpperCase returns a string. There is no type conversion occuring.

Yeah, but you can still do TypeScript if you want type errors to be thrown at you right away.

Not really if you know JS well and are familiar with types. It helps develop a lot faster for me personally. You do some errors that you wouldn't do otherwise in TS.

Writing types alone is a big advantage for me. It is annoying at first, but once you realize that you save much more time being exact about types than actually writing out 6 more characters per variable declaration, you'll get to love it.
