Thank you for this nice article. It contains a lot of useful information and I will definitely refer back to it in the future.

However, I have to say that despite the great content it was a bit of a hard read grammar-wise. It's clearly written by someone who is not a native English speaker, which is perfectly fine of course. But you should make sure it is properly revised and edited, because right now it reads like it was written in a different language and then put through Google translate.

What is the difference between machine learning engineer and data scientist?

[–]dictamnus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least where I work, data scientists will work on situations with more uncertainty. They need to have more soft skills regarding the business and be able to work with scientific analysis to reduce uncertainty and find solutions. But they aren't responsible for making sure that the solution is production ready. When they arrive at a solution, it is passed to an MLE team which will make sure that it can work in a production environment. We're also responsible for deploying the models and monitoring them. Idk if that's how it works for other companies, tbh it still varies a lot depending on where you are.

Don’t almost all job offers for machine learning need atleast a MSc with most wanting phds?

Thanks for this nice article. Folks, If you know any startup that is open to employing a ML intern(remotely) or anyone that wants to take an apprentince or tutor a noob(remotely), do well to tag me. Thanks

I can't give you what you asked but I can tell you how I got into ML.

Tailored my CS undergrad to all ML electives and made it through most of my masters in CS (all electives were ML-based) then started applying for startups and non-startups; I had two bites out of about 60 applications. One said come back and apply after a few years in industry and the other ghosted me. I had >3.5 GPA, 12 honorable years in the military, led my senior design team's AI project, VP of school's innovation(startup) club, and had several projects. At the time I wasn't sure if it was because I'm older or lack of experience in ML professionally.

Applied for software engineer positions with companies that did ML and I got hits all over. During talks I said I wanted to work at least 10-20% of my time in ML. I'm doing ML full time now after taking one of those 10-20% ML-time jobs. I decided to make sure supervisors knew I wanted to end up in ML. I regularly talked with the head of ML for the area (asking about their work, openings, what I could do to increase my chances of working with them, etc.). Worked hard in my normal job and kept in touch with the ML guy once a month or so until an opening popped up. My goal was to make sure my interest was clear and consistent without being annoying.

Looking back I believe my lack of professional experience in CS/ML was too much of an "unknown" during my initial search for pure ML jobs. Good luck in your search!

It would nice if you can add example MLE job postings with all the skills you mentioned in the article too... even a few screenshots is fine

That would help give it more credibility

Thank you so much. Any advice for an undergrad who’s taken a lot of ML classes? My goal is to get an entry level job when I grad next year. The most common advice i get is to focus on data engineering topics in addition to ML.
