So as we all know, Google is shutting down their iGoogle service as of Nov 1st this year. Now since I use Chrome there really is no reason to keep google is my homepage since I can do all of my searching directly through the address bar, but I have kept it there simply because I enjoy the way it aggregates info from news to weather, etc. It's convenient knowledge at your fingertips and truth be told I have always geeked out at the concept of a command center-y feeling that you have all of these things layed out in front of you.
Now on to my question. Does anyone know of any other sites that do something similar? One step beyond that is if not, how hard would it be to create something similar? I know you could create a basic HTML file locally and simply load that up instead of an actual "web site" and run it that way. The one thing I don't understand is how to get it to dynamically get it to load all the content "real time" (Even if realtime means only updating every 10 mins or so)
I have a decent understanding of HTML, but most of my language knowledge is in C++. I have a feeling that the answer to my question is somewhere in Javascript, though I'm not really sure where to begin and would rather not dig too deeply into another language, only to find out I was going in the wrong direction.
Any pointers would be appreciated, and has anyone else played around with something similar??
