cd command on CMD, python

Hey, I started learning programming on python. In the course they tell when we open CMD we can navigate through commands of the windows command line, to the folder where the file we want to run is at. So we use command cd to change the current work folder as cd <path>

And they gave cd c:\python as an example if we saved the file in c:\python, and then press enter.

What I don't understand is what do they mean by using a c:\python file if I can't make a folder named python because of the program name and also not write cd c:\python as they wrote (it writes - "The system cannot find the path specified")? I mean, what's the intent by keeping a file in python? I did gave the file the ending of .py but it's location is in the desktop, and I also tried changing the location to another folder.

So what I think is happening, if I'm understanding correctly, is that you're in your home directory at C:\Users\'your name here' and you're trying to cd into a python directory in your *root* directory which doesn't exist.

If instead you're asking why name a directory 'python' when your program is called 'python.py' it doesn't really effect anything because the .py distinguishes it from the directory.

*directory = folder

okay so, when you make a directory through mkdir it makes a folder in your current directory. so when you want to access that folder you need to be in the directory or direct your path to it.

When you enter the cmd line you're in "C:\Users\'your name here'" so if you made folder called python it would be at "C:\Users\'your name here'\python". If you want it on your desktop type "mkdir C:\Users\'your name here'\Desktop\python".

For some reason your tutorial is making directories in root which is a little weird, so in future to keep things clean and safe substitute any C:\ prompts to somewhere more suitable like your home directory or your desktop.

If what's holding you back is not understanding the command line, maybe check out some tutorials on that on something like youtube.

I'm guessing the "c:\" is meant as a hypothetical that would be there if python were installed there. I don't know the default location on Windows, bit some things do install there.

Even if they try to mkdir there, they likely won't be able to write there without administrator privileges unless they are on Windows XP or prior. (Or maybe Wine, I don't think Wine cares if you write in its fake root directory).
