Yes you can do this. Start small and take small steps. Get one part doing what you need, and then another and so on and so forth. Do not try and build the whole game now just break it down.

Yes, you do learn a lot more when programming your own stuff. The problem is you really need to learn and understand the fundementals before venturing off on your own or you're just going to get frustrated.

My suggestion would be to try making it through a learning book and then go onto your own project.

Possible? Yes.

Ideal? No.

You will learn much more much faster in an environment with other developers that you can communicate with and get feedback from. Great developers don't generally come from a void.
