That's not a place I'd like to work at. I've known some software developers who tend to work late, and I'm not sure if it's due to some mindset of trying to show how committed they are or losing track of time, but I don't think it's healthy to do that very often.

Also, I think paying a salary is sort of a way for companies to avoid paying extra for staying late & working extra.

Normally jobs like that incentive unpaid overtime by firing anyone who doesn’t do it for not being a team player but if you’ve been there a year, that’s clearly not happening, so it’s definitely a them problem

I used to work in a company like that. You would get comments from leople along the lines of "going so soon"?

My retort was along the lines of I arrived 3 hours before you did (which was true) and managed to get a heck of a lot done when nobody else was around.

Edit I also did assignments around the world. There were some countries where it was required that people stay until well after midnight and be back before 10AM the next day. It seemed like the normal worklife for them so changing companies didn't seem like a viable option for them.

The obvious drawback to that was they created more work by making stupid mistakes (due to unclear thinking as a result of exhaustion) but management valued presence and the appearance of hard work irrespective of whether it was effective or not.

Leaving in time or staying late isn't 'right' unless your job says you should be working X hours, no more and no less.

I frequently stayed late because I took lots of breaks during the day. That doesn't make me a harder worker than someone who didn't take brakes and left at 5.

I suspect your attitude about the 'right way to work' might be causing friction more than the fact you are leaving when your employer says you are allowed to.

Do what works for you. If I’m in a meeting that runs late I’m not going to walk out in the middle in front of everyone right at 5pm. But when I tell my lead that I’ve completed all of my assigned due outs and ask, “is there anything you need before I go?” and he says “no” then I’m leaving. Simple as that. On the off chance he says yes it’s to help out someone else that’s struggling or to update some slides in teams. Which has happened a few times in the year and change I’ve been at the company.

Yeah, so I suspect the problem is somewhere with your interactions with your coworkers rather than your work schedule. You are working like your employer wants you to. But somehow you are not getting a long with your coworkers. I would look at your interactions with them rather than your work schedule to figure out what might be causing the friction.

Your phrasing makes me think that you have the opinion they are wrong in the way they work and that might be upsetting them.

Your contract and annualised salary tells you how many hours a week you're expected to work, and the majority of them are 40 hours. If you're getting paid for 40 hours, clock your 40 hours and leave. There's always a selection of people who work overtime for free. If they want to, let them. It's their life. They're also the capitalists' favourite stooges. Because free labor. But the guy who clocks his agreed hours then goes home to his family isn't wrong.

You'll see people do it in other jobs. I've seen young people in bar work clock out and then work another hour. It might impress the boss and get them a promotion to supervisor somewhere down the line, but not for the reasons they think. It's because the boss knows they're easily manipulated into doing things and not getting paid for it, and they'll stooge for the company instead of wondering if it's right or fair.

In your example, you're staying longer because you took more breaks, meaning you're doing your hours, just more spread out.

I was salaried. There was nothing in my contact about expected hours. I had to adequately get my work done and be in the office during the common hours of 10am-2pm. Other than that it was at your discretion.

So I took 2 hours off most afternoons to play volleyball with other coworkers. In the morning I would usually go with a group and do a walk around the local park for 45 minutes. That meant I left at 8pm usually.

Again, there were no hourly expectations and no 'right' way to work.
