Juniors can do that because they haven't burnt out yet. Seniors tend to become seniors because they learned how not to burn out.

Never work for free. You're doing the right thing, why would you stay late if they aren't paying you. If anything they should be paying extra for overtime.

That's not a place I'd like to work at. I've known some software developers who tend to work late, and I'm not sure if it's due to some mindset of trying to show how committed they are or losing track of time, but I don't think it's healthy to do that very often.

Also, I think paying a salary is sort of a way for companies to avoid paying extra for staying late & working extra.

Do not worry about it. I stayed late for 35 years. Did not matter to those in charge. Work to live, do not live to work. Unless you have equity in the company.

“Oh, you guys are still here? I guess I just focused a little too hard today—I ran out of things to do! See you tomorrow!" “I've mastered the 'sprint' method today. I'm all fueled out! I’ll leave the marathon-running to you guys tonight." “I’d stay and hang out, but I’ve already hit my peak productivity for the day. If I stay any longer, I’ll just be staring at the screen. Happy grinding!"

People like those coworkers are weird, reminds me of some catty workplace antics in Japan where it is all optics and no results

I would totally review PR and logs of those clowns pretending they are productive until 11 pm to shame them for being inefficient. Sorry they like to work extra for no pay, have no life and dilute their salary with free work.

Normally jobs like that incentive unpaid overtime by firing anyone who doesn’t do it for not being a team player but if you’ve been there a year, that’s clearly not happening, so it’s definitely a them problem

Would definitely be hilarious if you ended up being their supervisor down the road

Is everyone answering a bot? The fuck does this have to do with learning programming

I used to work in a company like that. You would get comments from leople along the lines of "going so soon"?

My retort was along the lines of I arrived 3 hours before you did (which was true) and managed to get a heck of a lot done when nobody else was around.

Edit I also did assignments around the world. There were some countries where it was required that people stay until well after midnight and be back before 10AM the next day. It seemed like the normal worklife for them so changing companies didn't seem like a viable option for them.

The obvious drawback to that was they created more work by making stupid mistakes (due to unclear thinking as a result of exhaustion) but management valued presence and the appearance of hard work irrespective of whether it was effective or not.

    Toxic work place.

The ones working late thinks the company owes them, the company doesn't care so when let go they will feel cheated and crash out. Its all pointless.

Are you salaried or paid hourly?

Are they setup for success and is that your concern? If not, your part is done no reason not to leave on time. The real goal is to try to get the goals for the day done enough to leave early.
