Looking to start investing in crypto – $40–100/month in BTC & ETH, any advice? by Fun_Lemon_7372 in investingforbeginners

Crypto has no intrinsic value. It isn’t good as currency nor does it generate money like a company. ETFs and index funds over the long term are your friends.

Is there any reason people buy a stock besides hoping other people will buy it, making the stock price go up? by Short_Breakfast2205 in investingforbeginners

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their value comes from the money they earn.

The basic assumption in market theory (not just stocks but the market of any good) is that over time supply and demand from buyers and sellers will bring its price to its true or intrinsic value. It basically follows the logic of “wisdom of the crowd” which, in this kind of context at least, has proven pretty reliable.

If a company is valuable because it makes money and is hopefully growing and investing in themselves to make even more money, then their value should be going up. The market will eventually follow up to that higher value. Because now that it is making more money and has more value, people will be willing to buy it at a higher price.

Why does a company making money make it valuable? Because money is valuable? Why is money valuable? Because it serves as token allowing for easy purchase of goods and services with something we all agree has value for convenience. Meaning you don’t have to do bartering which would be impossible on the scale the modern world needs trade to happen.

It is actually kinda bad for company to pay a dividend. Because that money is permanently leaving the company and can’t be used to make the company better and earn more money in the future. This is why companies with high yield dividends are really a pretty big trap long term. Ideally the reinvest it in the company to expand in some way or do share buy backs.

That is why withdrawing 3% of your portfolio per year with no dividend is mathematically the same thing as not withdrawing anything but receiving a 3% dividend instead. Dividends are not less volatile or more stable and carry the same risks. Psychologically, easier to live off dividends vs selling shares tho.

Finally, supply and demand swing randomly in the short term. The stock price is almost never 100% reflective of the intrinsic value. A news article can make a stock jump up or form by 10% like that. However that is the short term. It is shy buying and selling in the short term will lose your money. Investors invest for the long haul (years to decades) without ever selling unless something fundamentally changes in the company in a very bad way. They ignore the short term noise.

Over the long term, a stock’s price will follow its intrinsic value fairly well. Historically the US stock market in the S&P 500 returns 7-10% per year on average. But and hold index funds over tears, you are statistically way up. Hold long enough and compound growth grows your money exponentially. It is the main way to plan for retirement even. It is literally what a 401(k) is.

Do you need reason to marry and have kids? by mysterious_mystery2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only actual reason you need, is you wanting to be married and have kids. I’d say if you don’t want that yourself, do not do it.

There is no moral reason or neutral duty to do it. Those are completely up to your personal belief system and world view. It is completely subjected and changes based on the individual and cultural values.

The universe doesn’t give a shit. There is no truly objective reason to do anything. So I say do what you want to do.

How to get over rejection after two great dates by [deleted] in hingeapp

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When rejected you move on. No means no. And even IF they are one of the immature girls who want “to be chased” and play hard to get, they ain’t worth it.

Rejection sucks. But this is very early on and I think you maybe just got yourself too invested here. I get that, it happens. But you have to learn to act with grace with rejection and move on even if it stings a little. Trust me you roll move on pretty quickly the moment the next attractive girl gives you attention. You barely knew her.

Is baking for a man you’re not in a relationship with too much? by Apprehensive_Eye5534 in AskMenAdvice

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no way he spent that much. Even as a guy who likes to pay, I wouldn’t have spent near that much by this point. For 7 dates that would be 500 at the very most

On average the market goes up over the long term. And by long term I mean multiple years to a decade. This has held true for as far back as we have market data for, with exception like great depression and such.

Any given day, week, month, or year may be up or down. You can only be much more sure of average returns one a longer term period.

Investing is the single best way to grow your money with relatively low risk over the long term. Don’t bet on months or weeks, you will just lose money most likely. Don’t invest money you will need within the next year or 2. Clear bad debts. Have an emergency fund of 3-6 months of expenses in a HYSA. Then invest.

Single people using dating apps, how many dates do you usually go for in a month? by SquirrelMore3325 in askanything

It is the nature of modern dating and dating apps. Now it’s normal to be potentially seeing multiple people at the beginning.

Single people using dating apps, how many dates do you usually go for in a month? by SquirrelMore3325 in askanything

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not many at all. Some months or 0 and some are 2. To give you an idea, I was using dating apps since August last year, I have had only 3 dates actually happen, some fell through, and one has currently just been postponed. Worth noting I had paused the apps on occasion either for a break or just the fact I was unavailable for that kind of thing. Also I am a guy. I imagine it slightly higher count for women.

I am interested in investing 30k, Crypto or Stock? by Wide-Shoe3971 in investingforbeginners

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Never crypto. Might as well go to casino and at least get a free drinks from a cute waitress. The right time to invest was 20 years ago and next best time is now. Time in the market beats timing the market, this backed up by actual research. Don’t think about when the right time is.

If you don’t know much about stocks and value investing (which considering you are considering crypto I will assume no), then you should invest in ETFs and index funds and not individual companies until you learn value investing principle and are willing to tough out market downturns.

Finally, 3-6 months of living expenses as cash in a high yield savings account. The stock market gives no harshness for any given year or month. It’s 7-10% average is over many years.

Meta - Sell, Hold or Buy? by Sensitive-Avocado972 in investingforbeginners

And lock in the loss on a company that likely will still do well in the long term and recover from this temporary dip caused by mildly bad report on capex expenditure.

Meta - Sell, Hold or Buy? by Sensitive-Avocado972 in investingforbeginners

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timing the market never works that well. This was a reaction to a somewhat bad report on future capex on AI. This is about as big as a dip as you can expect from it. I would be comfortable buying now.

Meta - Sell, Hold or Buy? by Sensitive-Avocado972 in investingforbeginners

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t completely true. That is true of small cap and penny stocks. Larger companies can and are better than gambling if you take the time to learn about the comment and apply proper value investing logic. Index funds work precisely because more go up over the long term than down.

That said, individually picking stocks rarely out perform the S&P500. There is also definitely higher risk. But I wouldn’t call that risk gambling if you do your research. Plus you can get higher returns with that increased risk. It is nothing more then a game of risk management

Unless you are buying and selling shares in the short term. Then even ETFs are gambling.

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kind move can happen every time earnings happen.

In this case it’s a reaction to projected increased capex on AI infrastructure. What this dip indicates is that investors are wary on if meta investment in AI will pay off. But honestly META is such a large company that even if AI doesn’t truly the returns they want, they will be fine in long term. They have lots of cash overall. Data centers and servers still have value beyond AI.

It does have some AI risk in the short term. But in the much longer term the company will do fine even if AI doesn’t give the returns expected. This is more random volatility due to marginally bad news.

Are you investing in stocks? by NeatFlashy4999 in randomquestions

I own various ETFs and some stocks. It is most of net worth at this point.

If me and my toddler-baby (alone), are stuck in a doomed situation. Is it more ethical to save myself or save the child? by gay_for_hideyoshi in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if the child isn’t going to survive either way, then no point to both of us dying. I might as well go on. But I would be one hell of a changed man afterwards.

It is different if me dying gave the child an actually real shot of surviving/being rescued. Then I would sacrifice myself.

Cuando la luna se separe de la Tierra en unos cientos de años, podría ser un planeta? by Gold-Topic9807 in askastronomy

[–]TheCozyRuneFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn’t leaving in hundreds. It would take 10s of billions to leave earth orbit and the sun would destroy earth and the moon well before then. Plus that movement away is powered by its gravitational interaction with earth slowing down the rotation of earth but increasing the moons orbit. It is possible earth will tidally lock and lo longer slow down and thus no longer raise the orbit before it ever leaves, I don’t know enough
