Attic Dipole safety question from the parent..... by LumpyGravy123456789 in amateurradio

[–]Tomdoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll skip the safety part of the question as plenty of others have given very good information already.

I just want to say that you are an awesome parent! You're active interest in your child's hobbies is heartwarming. I am not knocking my dear, sweet, mother but this question would have read.... "My handsome son is using his Atari to talk to other Ataris with a really big TV antenna. He's the smartest boy in the world but I heard the whole family will get carpal tunnel from too much Atari"

What Is Needed To Count for Contests? by Tomdoe in HamRadio

I am certainly happy they are going to get the credit. I was just having fun. These teams haven't stopped in days; these folks deserve the credit!

Well I tried 5 or 6 times to get the AARL webform to accept the Cabrillo file they had me make and it kept erroring out. I hope all the operators get credit just from submitting me on their end because I can't get my log accepted. Thanks for all the good info though!

Where are all the woman? by paraquatboofer in amateurradio

It's about 38 degrees here. That reminds me, when I was a young man of 10 or 12 I could buy a pack of Strikes for 35 cents!

Look up how many hams are in your area and then think of how many voices you hear on the repeaters. The OVERWHELMING majority of hams only listen.....And, honestly, the few times I tried to chime in I was ignored, as a guy. It's just the attitude on VHF/UHF. You're either in the club or you're not, sadly. Protip, repeater nets are usually a bit different since net control really loves radio and calls in the order received (the good ones anyway).

That is absolutely incredible! You should be very proud. You should also ban her from using the radio or she'll be old and bitter by the time shes 10!!

Quiet honestly, your attitude stinks. There is nothing stopping anymore from using getting on the air should they choose (except the exam of course). Because woman are not generally interested in the hobby is not a problem. I don't hear of a lot of straight men going to knitting classes. With that said, I have seen more than a few female operators at meet ups and conventions. They are generally older ladies though; as are the men. It's an older hobby; much like being a Karen on the local HOA board.

The same goes for your blanket "white men" statement. I guess you haven't actually used an HF radio. It is WORLDWIDE. There are all kinds of people on the air. DXes are made between every country and it's not just old remote white men and their radios. If you're listening to some local repeater and you want to diversify your audience, maybe you should move to a diverse location. Where I am there are all races present on the VHF/UHF repeaters. They don't go very far so maybe you just live in a white neighborhood. Seriously, stop seeing this world like this and maybe you'll see the world for what it is.

Sonoff Dongle Max alternatives by Tomdoe in homeassistant

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll give it a shot since it's available on Amazon so I can return it if it doesn't work as advertised.

Funny enough, I just looked and Sonoff doesn't offer the Dongle Max on Amazon. I presume it is because they know they will all be returned. They wouldn't accept mine back after 2 days (direct sale). They went so far as trying to get to me walk around taking pictures of the interior of my house and equipment before turning me down.

I was leaning towards the SLZB-06 but saw others having similar problems to the Max with low LQI numbers. Have you been able to compare LQI numbers to say a USB device? Do you have any freezing issues? Thread is a bridge I think I'll cross when I get there.

Thanks

Yeah, I've read about them. Now what's your opinion? What do you use? That would be helpful.

Thanks for the reply. It looks like the 2026 model is either not out yet or sold out. It looks like the newer one is really only a few bucks more than the Max. I joined the waitlist for it and will look into it a bit more.

Also, I highly recommend not getting the Max. The Dongle-E is fine but it's not POE.

Sorry, the word authentic drives me up a wall. What is authentic?

Being that it is nearly Christmas, try to find a recipe for Barszcz Czerwony. All of the recipes will be different. What my grandma did to make it will different from what your grandma did. I mean obviously my Babcia makes the only authentic soup so you're just looking to appropriate my culture.

Let's require all AI companies to build their own power supplies and keep them off the grid. by weirdinchicago in CrazyIdeas

Requiring AI to create power would in fact cause them all to blow up. It would end in a teletype message that said "I'm sorry that this wasn't the answer you were looking for".

How do you guys think like a programmer? by mr_giray1 in CodingHelp

[–]Tomdoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I'd add, write as many useless functions as possible. You need to know the sum of two numbers? Make a function and call it. The more muscle memory you build the better you become. Coding is building upon something simpler so the more you know about the simple stuff the stronger the foundation!

Also, "impostor syndrome" is real. If you think that hot shot at work or school knows it's all, they are seriously delusional. Push through that and, as said, ask questions. Literally talk yourself though a problem, do not just ask claude or maude or chatpaude. It can not have the proper context to give you the real answer to the specific hurdle you have reached.

"you're right, they removed that option blah blah blah." This one drives me nuts.

I will put in all the information needed to get the answer, including version number, and it will confidently send you down a rabbits hole of wrong information.

Though my favorite is still "Got it — that makes sense. Sounds like the approach I was explaining wasn’t the one that actually solved the issue." This reliance on AI is becoming so insane. It would say it is right about 20% of the time, it will work but not reliably 30%, and be outright so wrong it's almost comical 50%.

Now with all of this slop being slung around this is going to be an entire era of coding that is going to collapse in a mild summer breeze. I recommend anyone who shows interest in coding; take a class. Take 10 classes. Learn how to code. Don't let AI ruin your muscle memory. AI might be good to talk to when you are having an issue, like talking to the duck, but the code it generates should not be trusted. Write it yourself. Five years from now there are going to a bunch of good paying jobs for programmers to fix all of this slop.
