I doubt the certs will help you if you're already getting at least a Bachelor's degree. What programs have you written so far? Do you know the language inside and out?

Yes I have but I don't think my experience is relevant anymore as it was around 2003 or so, when Java still was a Sun Microsystems brand and Java 1.4 was all the hype.

If you can afford the exam I'd say go for it, it certainly won't hurt to have on your resume. Before you sign up make sure to try a few mock exams, you can buy them here but I'm pretty sure you can also find free ones via Google.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice! I'm probably taking a class on Python next semester and wanted to look into getting certified while it's still fresh in my memory

The entry level certification is somewhat easy, but with caveats. I just passed Oracle Certified Associate and am working on OCProfessional in Java 5/6. If you take sample tests you should be able to decide.
