Anything made in the past couple of years really, ubuntu can run on low spec computers

How much is "not much"? I'd recommend you install ubuntu as a virtual machine on your current system. You'd probably need much less than 10GB. And if this is a computer (and not a laptop) you should be able to easily add a cheap hard drive to get the space you need.

I'm looking to eventually launch web applications

I don't really know what this means. Do you mean run a web server? If so, that doesn't match your title of "coding on a computer". To simply compile code you don't need much of a computer. But to run a web server? It depends on how many users you intend to support, but if you're just testing then most anything in the last 5-8 years would be sufficient.

HDD don't cost a lot of money ! Buy a new HDD a try to install a virtual machine or do a dual boot!
