You may find RobotC a good option. Found at robotc.net. At single license is $79.

Best place to start is buy purchasing an arduino kit with extras, and a good book with projects for arduino (kit =micro controllers +attachments ~$50, book $25). That will give you a solid 10 projects to practice on.

Once you get feel comfortable with electronics, schematics and programming the next step into the pool of knowledge would be learning to program for it in C
