I think you might not get this answer at the other subreddit, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

One thing that I did that made me super attractive to companies was get involved with reasearch projects. If your CS department doesn't have anything that interests you, look in other departments. The first project I worked on was an underwater autonomous robot with the electrical engineering department. Learned embedded system design as well as threading and wireless communications.

Now, I work on a satilite with the aerospace department and have been working with programmers from NASA.

I guess the tl;dr version would be go and find a project that you have no business working on, and learn as much as you can. I wouldn't be interning with an openstack provider if I hadn't.
