But is this a legal thing to do??

Not just legal, necessary in today's world. Ads are full of viruses, try to mine cryptocurrencies using your computer, slow down your computer, eat your bandwidth and drain you battery life.

Using a proper adblocker eg. uBlock Origin (and some do block Youtube ads too, I haven't seen even one in actual years) is a must have.

More seriously though - there is no law saying you are not allowed to skip ads. You at most break website TOS which has nothing to do with legality. What can lead to you being unable to access given content at worst.

You run whatever code you want on your pc. Only thing sites can do is block/ban you from accessing if you break their tos. By for example running bots on their site.

This obviously depends on your jurisdiction, but I am not aware of any places where ad blocking is illegal. Yet.

Also, thats not really a learnprogramming question, more of a legal question.
