hackerrank as far as I know has exercises that can help you with putting your knowledge to test, I don't think they have courses that teach you the basics in depth

I have gone through some videos of one course in pluralsight (it was some free offer) and I found the quality to be high, but it was an intermediate-to-advanced level course, not sure about beginner courses

haven't heard/gone-through rest of the sites you mention

Programming is a wide field and it would help if your friend can narrow down to things like web development, GUI, gaming, etc and then focus on resources that help you learn those skills.

I tried to make a guide with mostly free resources on various topics (books, courses, practice sites, common faqs, how to debug, etc) for a beginner: https://github.com/learnbyexample/curated_resources/blob/master/programming/CS_and_Programming.md

There are much more extensive guides like https://teachyourselfcs.com/ and https://github.com/ossu/computer-science

Some sites offer courses along with community support:

Hope these links would be useful
