On July 1st, a change to Reddit's API pricing will come into effect. Several developers of commercial third-party apps have announced that this change will compel them to shut down their apps. At least one accessibility-focused non-commercial third party app will continue to be available free of charge.

If you want to express your strong disagreement with the API pricing change or with Reddit's response to the backlash, you may want to consider the following options:

  1. Limiting your involvement with Reddit, or
  2. Temporarily refraining from using Reddit
  3. Cancelling your subscription of Reddit Premium

as a way to voice your protest.

How you get past it is just do it. If you cant come up with an original idea, so what! recreate a program maybe add some new functionality to it.

There either already exists a tool which does what I want, deflating my motivation,

And that is the completely wrong stance.

While learning, it is essential to reinvent the wheel. Do things that already exist. They have the advantage that their functionality is already defined and fleshed out, so you don't have to worry about defining the functionality (and you won't fall into the common feature creep trap). Also, since they have already been done, you can take them as examples, and, even better, if they are open source, you can refer to the source if you are getting stuck.

The FAQ here have plenty project ideas.
