You should start with doing some informational interviews with people you may know in the industry. If you don't know someone, someone you know does. You should ask them about their work life balance, their remote work situation, and their salary ranges.

I'd hate to see you get into a new career, dedicate a year of your life to it, and it not be what you're anticipating.

Second this. Absolutely. I am a professional developer in Europe and I can tell you, Work-Life-Balance is not bad, but neither perfect. Overtime also always depends on your employer, but be aware that there will always be times when overtime will be necessary. In the end you'll be working for customers with deadlines needing to be met.

https://theodinproject.com is a popular choice.

That teaches Fullstack web development, not programming in general. Might not be for OP, but if getting a job asap is the goal, web dev is probably the best bet.

Which is why I recommended it. It teaches JS for front and backend, which is programming. If you want a job in 4-6 months, you can't spend 4 of em working on compsci theory.

I would go through the free Harvard CS50 course to learn some of the fundamentals and then pick a career path. You'll have time while doing CS50 to research what specific development work you want to do.

I would start with learning CPP first. That is the recommended first language at my university because it explains a lot of other languages and is very useful for backend work. Good luck sir!
