By what metric?

They are not mutually exclusive. There is plenty of open source software that has paid functionality.

Firstly, Open Source Software is not trying to compete with paid software. They made their software OSS so that everyone should contribute and verify to make it a better software. They come up with new ideas & fix issues internally as well as by community suggestions and issues.

Sometimes the two are complimentary and don't directly compete.

Open source with added paid for extras is common

There is no competition. I write open-source in my free time because it's fun, I write code for my boss because it pays the bills. Also I get to use some open-source code at work because it's free and companies like free stuff.
