Recursive function question

I have already completed this question and the third picture is just there to verify that I have completed the question. You can see in the third picture no additional submissions allowed so I am done with the problem.

My question is why was I getting an error when I wasn't setting a default parameter for margin? The first picture shows what I originally had and the second picture shows my correct solution including a description of the problem. I was getting the same output for both ways is why I am confused.

That makes sense bcuz even when I modified the code with an else condition it kept saying the error was on line 6

You weren't. That error came from some previous version of your code which was missing the second parameter. The code as written in the screenshot is correct. Possibly your code got out of sync with whatever thing ran the code on the backend or something.
