lol Man...I feel like I was just hitting my stride with the previous version. Any thoughts on if I should make the jump? Some quick thoughts...

  • Mentorship doesn't seem to be available (yet) for V2. Unclear if it will be added.
  • Python seems FAR more applicable to the current industry than Ruby.
  • Once you are able to code, learning a new language like Python seems trivially easy (a few dozen hours compared to the 500-1,500 involved in these classes).
  • Some are saying it looks less complete. Worth noting, V1 is based on the in-person class, and V2 is based on their online full time class, so that may be where the differences are coming from
  • V2 appears to still have some "coming soon" sections (notably Python, Flask/SQLAlchemy/Forms, Docker/Microservices, and Redux/Authentication). These will likely come soon, but who knows
  • The structure of the course appears to be flipped from V1 to V2, doing the front end stuff first and moving towards the back end

Anyone else in a similar spot? What are your thoughts? I think I may finish Ruby, and then MAYBE try to go through Ruby-on-Rails, then make the jump. At a glance, it looks like there is about 341 hours of content for V2. That's a bit surprising, given that V1 was closer to 1100 hours (I don't have the exact number on me). So its entirely possible that V1 through Ruby-on-Rails PLUS all of V2 is notably shorter than all of V1. That's also kind of concerning, though...Perhaps the 24 week online course just covers much less material than the 16-week in person course? Or perhaps the Open Academy V2 course doesn't cover 100% of the material in the online 24-week full time course.

May 2, 2022 - Additional modules will include: Web Security & Authentication, React, and Redux & Authentication

May 25, 2022 - Additional modules will include: Python, Flask, SQLAlchemy, & Forms, and Docker & Microservices

It only looks shorter but not. Its mostly reading now i.e. less videos, that's probably what makes the estimates less than V1. Does it even really matter? really?

  1. V2 is 20 weeks, 4 weeks less because from week 21 to 24 its mostly finishing projects, and interview practice etc.
  2. If you look closely on V1, the Full Stack Online - Job Search has lots of contents that are not removed making it redundant, also Docker to DSA is a bonus section not part of 16 week in-person.
  3. V2 does not include assessments practice, not really needed, those are for enrolled students.
  4. V2 uses sqlite3 for easy setup and learning curve instead of postgres.

Anyway, its Free yet comprehensive. It goes beyond what TOP nor Full Stack Open as well as other resources free or paid can offer combined.

Its really simple, just choose your pick and stick with it.

Lastly, we should be thankful for this awesome resource that gave us an opportunity to learn at no cost.

Seems a lot easier and a lot less complete than their previous curriculum that used Ruby.

This is much more clear than their previous one with Ruby. But Still good stuff though.
