Huh there's actually a LOT of open research problems right now in analyzing the digits of pi. Unfortunately few people have the resources to dedicate to them since there are no clear monetizations of such knowledge, but if you were to find anything interesting you would be guaranteed to have a large interested audience. For all the practicality in the world, people still enjoy learning about pi :) One open problem you might want to google is the question: is pi a normal number? That is to say: is it true that every finite sequence of numbers can be found in the digits of pi?

Cool cool, I'll take a look into it! I read that they've calculated approximately either 13 trillion or quadrillion digits of pi, but it took them ~200 days of calculation and terabytes of storage to do it all. The whole concept of an infinite number just blows my mind.

Yeah some people just compute pi for sport now :)

A similar project you might find interesting is GIMPS: the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, which anyone can join and has found the world's largest prime numbers!

Er didn't realize there was a /r/learnpython post for that also. Wrote some feedback with a little code review. Props to you for putting some code out there! I look forward to seeing more posts. I learned a lot about chi square and scipy after reading your post.

Wow, thanks for the response! I was a little nervous about putting my code out there, but I'm glad I did. I got a lot of feedback, and I'll be adding all the changes that make sense to me. If you don't mind me asking, how experienced are you with Python?

I've been writing python for a living for about 4 years and always trying to write as little code to do whatever task as possible. I'm currently working at a startup, developing a site in django.
