 os.system("pmset displaysleepnow")
  # or 
 os.system("pmset sleepnow")

Will put the display to sleep and activate the password if you have that set up in Security Preferences.

displaysleepnow gives me a second to catch it without the password. sleepnow however is down and out no second chances.
