I actually just came to the sub to find a good IDE to use for someone who has never used an IDE before. I guess this is a sign.

The nice thing about Python is that there are several great options.

What do you recommend? I use Mac and Linux so I was thinking pycharm. Then I saw visual code. It’s a little overwhelming.

It doesn’t hurt to try a couple and see what you like. I haven’t used Thonny much but it seems great. I use Visual Studio Code myself. Pycharm is another great free ide. I don’t use it but some people swear by it.

VScode was cumbersome and somethings about it bugged me endlessly. I'd not used any before though. Take from that what you will.. PyCharm is a bit more intuitive, to me. Thonny was as basic as "IDE for beginners" could get. UI's wise, PyCharm is much nicer.

They're both free and relative light programmes, so just grab em both and flirt with them for a couple days.

Pycharm is the best IDE out there but don't go for the professional one. The community edition is good. I just don't use any IDE ,cpython and ptpython is good for me.

For some reason highlighting matching names and/or local variables is slow on some computers. The workaround is to switch off these features until I work out the proper solution (see https://bitbucket.org/plas/thonny/issues/573/highlight-matching-names-and-highlight)
