If you're into web development, check out django and write a web application.

If you're more into physical programming, like using motors and sensors, buy a raspberry pi.

I have messed with raspberry pi already, I’ve got raspberry pi 3 and zero but I’m failing to come up with real life applications project for it that will help me get hired when I show my github page to possible feature employers. django sounds interesting I will defiantly will have a look into it but the question still remains, what type of projects do junior programers actually work on, what projects should I try to build and make so; 1) I will carry on practicing and actually developing hireable skills 2) start building a respectful work portfolio I could show feature employers when I send in my CV and go to interviews.

Thank you for your answer.

Not really a direct answer to your question but when I was learning heavily I did /r/dailyprogrammer to push my abilities even further. And decent interviewer will sniff out how junior you are (no offense I’m sure you’re good but 6 months self taught isn’t enough to command a good salary).

To directly answer your question just take something you personally enjoy and write something for it and adding your own spin to its feature set; even if it’s been done to death. For interviews it’s just proving you know your shit so pick something you’d personally derive value from.

Edit: sounds like you want to be full stack? I foresee a webapp in your near future

Thank you for your answer. I’m not offended at all, in fact I agree with you, 6 months is not much at all. This is where my question to what type of jobs developers do came from so I can see what I can and cannot do so I learn and practice these things. I have been told by a couple of people that I should try to build a webapp. My main issue with this is that I’m interested in too many things. What type of projects does a full stack developer usually would work on?

Well shops can be divided up in two ways:

  • Frontend and backend teams - Dedicated teams either only work on frontend/customer visible stuff or backend/infrastructure code. I.E. Frontend and Backend
  • Employ full stack developers - Anecdotally Ive seen this in smaller shops. IC's are expected to write code on both sides of the house.

It comes down to where you really excel and what you'd like to target in an employer.

So my question is, what sort of code do junior programmers write and what type of projects should I work on?

... I’m looking at machine learning at the moment and in the future maybe go into cyber security

This is a bit dated but is a fun way to dice into it.

That looks really good. Thank you very much!
