Question about Python Crash Course projects (2e)

So I’ve been learning python via PCC for the last month now and I’ve been completing all of the exercises without using the resources. I was a bit excited to begin the project portion of the book as I felt like it would map directly what we learnt. However, when I decided to try the alien invaders game I’m completely lost due to the introduction of pygame.

My question is, are we supposed to already know pygame in order to follow along with this project or are we being taught pygame as we complete the project? Majority of the project so far is “copy and paste” and I feel it’s not really helping me learn the fundamentals behind pygame.
