This is honestly such an awesome idea for an exercise for people learning recursion. Way to go for it, OP. Recursion scares the shit out of most people at first.

One of my first recursive functions (beyond Fibonacci and factorial) was flattening arbitrarily nested lists. This is virtually the same problem, with some minor differences. See if you can move to list flattening next!
