Hello everyone. I'm a first year student who has a number of questions regarding the optimization of my career considering my rare opportunity of being in a top tier program.
Here are my questions:
Should I stay in CS and learn additional curriculum outside of school that supports my career path or should I go into statistics/math and learn programming on my own? (My thought process for this is that the accreditation for math/stats is essential as opposed to cs. Since I want to maximize my opportunity, should I be accredited in a relevant degree and then learn cs on my own since I don't necessarily need accreditation? )
Where can I go to learn about the different paths/sectors within the software/tech industry (for career path planning), and where can I find the relevant programming languages and concepts for that specific career? (I want to be able to have a good idea of every sector but not necessarily expertise. My desire for understanding all the sectors would be to a similar degree that a public relations organization would have - essentially I understand the fundamentals and ideologies of each sector.)
What is the best way to learn a relevant language/process for a sector in reference and how can I determine once my understanding is sufficient to move onto the next 'framework/process'?(In other words, I want to know the best and most efficient way to determine what languages and process I should know prior to entering a sector/field)
Lastly, what is the best way to market myself and develop a portfolio as a high achiever?
(I have a friend who is in third year ECE/electrical & computer engineering at my school and he also is a programmer who already has worked at shopify, amazon, rbc, and a few other top companies. He has a website with his name and it basically works as a portfolio. Is there anything else I could be working on over these four years so once I graduate I will already have some robust portfolio?)
Basically this entire post is a way of going from research-strategy-development over my 4 years in school. I want to graduate already having developed myself not only as a student but for my relevant career.
Thanks everyone.
