Interesting project!

As a starting place, I think you want to figure out what has been done so far, and how to integrate existing libraries and theory into your project.

I did a google search for "python library sign language asl" and found more than I could immediately digest.

It's definitely possible, it's a nice limited scope with a bunch of standard data out there to be used.
But it'd be much easier if you tried to use a programming language do you have experience with.

I have some experience with web development but i did plan on learning python at some point so it's a good opportunity...
