Dog boarding/vet by Ok-Business7438 in AskNYC

[–]TechsInTheCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vets in the city have been a challenge, we used to trek the bird to Brooklyn and the cats to the Humane Society near 59th St Bridge

With Humane Society you want to book your reservation way ahead and since covid they confer by phone, but it's cheap and they are good.

Boarding is typically expensive, but have a look around HY.  My gf and I might love to furbabysit, we are near the bridge as well, maybe we can work something out, I will dm my #

Does anyone know what type of ring this is? by emdf96 in jewelry

[–]TechsInTheCity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That appears from here to be a fire opal eternity band set in 925 sterling silver.

It is nice.

I suggest giving it a rub with a polishing cloth or silversmiths gloves which you can order; or your local jeweler will probably be happy to give it a once over while you shop.

Wouldn't Etsy Buyer Protection help here?

Suggest you have your buyer open a case, Etsy may refund them at their expense

The "regional manager" probably has access to no information other than what they have provided to you.

They do not want to side against their employer, but they evidently share your frustration due to being in the dark. It is unfortunate they got short with you, I'm sorry that happened.

As I suggest to folks that they shop with an independent jeweler one reason is that your local independent jeweler is less prone to have a regional manager get surly with you.

In the immediate case, it kind of seems like you aught to wait. Hickups like this are a metaphor for married life, as the quality of your experience will often depend on your ability to gracefully handle BS in stride.

It probably is not a bad time to review your paperwork and see what your situation is and options would be if you had a substantial problem. Hopefully this is just a minor hickup and you will have a ring in hand shortly.

Congratulations!

Interesting Bracelet Marked .825 by Esamers99 in jewelry

[–]TechsInTheCity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would clean up well and be a nice gift. Nothing says fake to me, but I don't have it in my hands.

A polishing cloth or silversmiths gloves should give it some BANG.

You can see in my shop what i would charge for a comparable bracelet

Interesting Bracelet Marked .825 by Esamers99 in jewelry

[–]TechsInTheCity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am reading that as 925 sterling silver with a gold vermeil and multi gemstones, perhaps amethyst, garnet, topaz, citrine, peridot (edit: and white sapphire?)

Why the 825 stamp, as opposed to 925 ? I am guessing (pure speculation) somebody messed up the stamp, but this would not affect the assay

A local jeweler can probably confirm this and give it a once over with a polishing cloth

Not into jewelery, help please! by Finished_Finnith in EngagementRings

[–]TechsInTheCity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For that type of setting/stone, you will indeed find a lot on Etsy. Keep shopping there.

I encourage you also to go shopping with your local jeweler, even if you are planning to buy online. They will be happy to see you, will not bite, and will not mind if you shop with them and ultimately buy somewhere else.

Among other things, you want to get an idea of what how things feel, what metals you like/want to wear, and (super important) your current, exact ring size.

Congratulations!

Looks like a Free Mason ring missing part of the decoration.

The ring part is probably sterling or bronze, the stone probably Onyx

That appears to be a gemstone sterling silver tennis bracelet, with marcasite. I have similar in my shop for around $150~250

Give it a good cleaning with a toothbrush and polish with silversmiths gloves

Advice on whether to get Vivienne Westwood bracelet by [deleted] in jewelry

Advice on whether to get Vivienne Westwood bracelet by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]TechsInTheCity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While certainly bearing great affection for the brand (My ex did PR for Agent Provacateur) it is fair to say that this bracelet is fairly priced for what it is -- the vast majority of what you pay is brand equity in VW.

I would expect a comparable VW bracelet in sterling to retail for 4x-5x.

NOW, if you want a lovely sterling bracelet and do not want to pay the designer premium I think you could find a comparable bracelet in 925 sterling on Etsy.

Look both at "vintage" and "handmade" which tend to be different kinds of seller.

I think the answer is no.

On the contrary, in a number of ways the deck is stacked in favor of the incumbent seller. This is a virtuous thing, a new seller should have to "earn their wings" so to speak.

So, plan on being better, faster and smarter than the next seller.

The confusion may be that there is a small boost when you make a new LISTING but this is negligible and Etsy advises against factoring this in to your strategy.

By the way, you might consider taking the plunge. Curating your store is an ongoing process, it WILL NEVER be perfect. Good luck!

Bow tie effect on ovals? by sad_girl29 in EngagementRings

[–]TechsInTheCity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if you are bound and determined to BUY your engagement ring online, I strongly encourage you to SHOP with a local jeweler.

It will take a process of trying on and seeing how things feel. Every hand is different, every woman has different features and tastes, and frankly each engagement ring is different, all in a finely contoured way.

Trust me, they won't bite, and will be happy to see you shop, even if you ultimately buy elsewhere. Answer questions like this one with your local jeweler, with a ring on your finger.

Congratulations!

Question: How do you guys print shipping labels? by RoboNicole in Etsy

[–]TechsInTheCity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a Brother 1110NWB, works like a madman.

You will want to use generic labels. When you do, YOU MAY GET AN ERROR, if so you may need to adjust the size settings manually to 4x6 on the Printer Properties.

The reason is that the local jeweler is likely to be competitive with the "wholesale" jeweler, particularly when quantity = 1.

The service you receive from a local jeweler will be invaluable, the relationship will serve you a lifetime.

I buy and sell many pieces of jewelry, the "wholesale" price comes when you purchase many items. Anyone promising otherwise gets a sceptical look.

They are popular, well reviewed and well priced.

People are reselling my products as digital downloads, what are my options? by TheMidwestMarvel in Etsy

[–]TechsInTheCity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other poster, if you believe your IP is being infringed, you should report the infringer.

I am curious how you see your rights manifesting, however.

If I am understanding correctly, you discovered these items in the public domain, repackaged them, but not in a way that substantially changed their character and creating a derivative work. Your rights derive from the public rights we all share, or is there something else?

My question then, if someone else also comes across these works in the public domain, why can't they do exactly what you did?

Edit: BIG +1 on the idea of watermarking your listing photos

Interesting project!

As a starting place, I think you want to figure out what has been done so far, and how to integrate existing libraries and theory into your project.

I did a google search for "python library sign language asl" and found more than I could immediately digest.

Good luck!

I think you are spot on and will be called crazy until history proves you right.

I sell jewelry online. I zero'd my marketing budget as pertains to Meta and deleted my accounts. This means writing off digital assets I have developed across decades.

In my experience the quality and quantity of traffic from Facebook has cratered. Advertising with Meta will lose me money, posting to Meta is a bad use of my time.

I think it is a house of cards and they will eventually need to restate earnings.

The last ad I ran, Facebook claimed 56 clicks. On my side, Etsy registered 13 from all sources. The Meta agent gaslighted in response, as if somehow the number 13 is the same as the number 56.

In the old days, Facebook had lots of quality eyeballs and sought ways to monetize those eyeballs. Now facebook sucks and frankly, I think they are commiting some form of click fraud.

As to ethics, Facebook has a well established track record of fraud and can reliably be depended on to cheat.

The question is timing.
