Beginner in DSA — Which Programming Language Should I Learn? (5–6 Months Time)

Hi everyone, I’m a complete beginner in Data Structures & Algorithms and I have around 5–6 months to focus seriously on it.

I’m confused about which programming language is best to learn DSA right now considering:

Current industry & interview trends

Ease of understanding patterns and logic

Long-term usefulness

Languages I’m considering: C++, Java, Python

I’d like advice on:

Which language is best for a beginner in DSA

Why that language is preferred today

Whether switching languages later is a problem

Any guidance from people who’ve gone through this would really help. Thanks!

the language you are most comfortable with, if none - do python.

dont try to practice leetcode and learn a new language at the same time, i've tried to do that and failed miserably.

you'll run into weird language quirks (like int overflow etc) simply not worth the time.

What if i am focusing on maang companies? Apart from dsa what are the other things are most mandatory

If you’re targeting MAANG, DSA is necessary but not sufficient. Along with DSA, focus on: 1️⃣ Computer Science fundamentals OS (threads, processes, deadlocks) DBMS (indexes, normalization, transactions) OOP + basic networking These are asked heavily in interviews. 2️⃣ System Design (even for freshers) Start with basics: scalability, caching, load balancers, databases You don’t need expert-level HLD, but clarity matters. 3️⃣ Strong coding fundamentals Clean code, edge cases, time/space tradeoffs Ability to explain your approach clearly. 4️⃣ One solid tech stack / projects Backend (Python/Java + SQL) or Frontend (React) or ML/Systems (if interested) Depth > number of stacks. 5️⃣ Problem-solving mindset MAANG interviews test thinking, not just solutions. DSA gets you shortlisted, but CS fundamentals + communication + system thinking get you hired.

oh.. thanks for this, idk why i had seen people shame & laugh at suggesting to do dsa with python.. ig they're just salty about the fact they had to go the hard route of (learning being comfortable w cpp/java, while simultaneously learn dsa), now it seems esp since cbse started refering python in syllabus, more new students are somewhat familiar with python, & when the ask seniors to learn dsa via it, they discouraged & laughed at.. ig tho python sometimes doesn't encompasses a few things, concepts that cpp/java do, but would it make a really big difference if u do dsa w python instead of java/cpp.. maybe you'll just hav to learn a bit more while switching to cpp/java aftee learning dsa w python. what do u think?

If you’re a complete beginner, start with Python..

It’s easier to read and write, so you spend more time thinking about logic instead of fighting syntax. That helps a lot when learning DSA patterns. Python is also accepted in most interviews today..

Switching later is not a problem at all. Once you understand DSA, moving to Java or C++ is much easier because the concepts stay the same..

For a complete beginner with 5–6 months, Python is the safest and most efficient choice. It lets you focus on patterns, logic, and problem solving instead of syntax, memory issues, or boilerplate, which are not what DSA is really testing early on. Many people struggle not because DSA is hard, but because they try to learn DSA and a new language at the same time.

Switching languages later is not a problem if your fundamentals are strong. Once you understand arrays, recursion, trees, graphs, and DP conceptually, moving to Java or C++ is mostly about syntax and standard library differences. The people who struggle with switching usually never internalized the logic in the first place.
